The Toy Story 3 game came out with the movie in 2010. It’s basically a 3D platformer/action-adventure game where you play as Woody, Buzz, or Jessie. BUT, the big deal was that it had TWO main ways to play: the normal Story Mode and the super-addictive Toy Box Mode.

Think of it like this: Story mode is like watching the movie again but you control the action. Toy Box mode is like dumping a giant bin of LEGOs and random toys onto the floor and just going nuts making your own fun.

I remember renting this from Blockbuster (RIP) expecting a typical, kinda lame movie game. Played through the story in a weekend, thought “yeah, that was okay.” THEN I booted up Toy Box mode… Dude, I didn’t return that rental for like three weeks. My late fees were insane, but totally worth it.

Story Mode: Reliving the Movie
Gameplay Loop
The story mode follows the movie pretty closely. You’ll play through about 8-9 distinct levels, each based on a major scene:

The opening train sequence (Buzz Lightyear video game style!)
Andy’s house shenanigans
Arriving at Sunnyside Daycare
Navigating Sunnyside under Lotso’s rule
The big escape sequence
The terrifying junkyard/incinerator level
The epilogue
In each level, you’ll swap between controlling Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. The core gameplay involves:

Platforming: Jumping across gaps, climbing stuff, basic 3D platformer fare. It felt pretty smooth for the time.
Simple Combat: Using Woody’s pull-string or Buzz’s laser (which just stuns enemies, it’s kid-friendly!) to deal with possessed toys or Zurgbots.
Puzzle Solving: Mostly involves finding items, hitting switches, or using character-specific abilities (like Woody’s shoulder charge or Buzz’s ability to toss Jessie high up).
Collectibles: Finding hidden items in each level unlocks stuff in the Toy Box mode, which was a genius way to link the two modes.
It’s not super hard, clearly aimed at a younger audience, but it was well-polished and fun. Probably takes about 5-7 hours to beat.

Toy Box Mode: The REAL Reason We Played
What It Is
Imagine getting a giant playset town called “Woody’s Roundup” and being able to do whatever you want. That’s Toy Box mode. It’s an open-world sandbox completely separate from the story.

What You DO
Build Your Town: You start with a basic Western town, but you earn gold by doing missions and finding collectibles. You use that gold to buy new buildings (like a barber shop, tailor, bank), decorations, and even change how buildings look (painting them!).
Customize EVERYTHING: You can buy outfits for the townspeople, change their hairstyles (put a mohawk on Stinky Pete!), and unlock different themes for your town.
Do Missions: Characters like Hamm (the Mayor), Slinky Dog, and others give you quests. These range from finding lost items, racing Bullseye, defending the town from bandits, exploring mines, throwing cows… it gets weird and fun.
Unlock New Toys: Buying certain buildings or completing quests unlocks new interactive toys, like vehicles (RC Car!), mounts (Bullseye!), or special items (Goo gun!).
Explore & Collect: The map isn’t huge by modern standards, but it’s packed with hidden capsules containing gold, customization items, and unlockables. Finding all the Zurg pods was a serious challenge! It was pure, creative fun. This mode basically laid the groundwork for Disney Infinity years later.

Who Are You Playing As? (Characters)
Playable Heroes
Woody: Uses his pull-string whip for combat and swinging across gaps. Can do a shoulder charge to break things. The all-around guy.
Buzz Lightyear: Has his laser (stuns enemies), can fly short distances (more like a glide), and can throw other characters to reach high places.
Jessie: Agile, uses her speed for certain challenges, can land precisely on small targets after jumping, and has a shoulder charge like Woody.
Emperor Zurg (Toy Box Only): Unlocked later, has his ion blaster. Playing as the villain was super fun.
Key NPCs (Mostly in Toy Box)
Hamm (Mayor): Gives you lots of missions.
Slinky Dog: Helps you find collectibles.
Rex: Usually involved in goofy quests.
Stinky Pete: Runs the shop where you buy stuff.
Bullseye: Your trusty steed for getting around fast.
Various Townspeople: Generic toy characters you can customize and interact with.

Graphics & Sound: How Does it Hold Up?
Graphics
Back in 2010, the graphics were actually pretty good for a movie tie-in! They captured the look and feel of the Toy Story world really well. Characters looked like their movie counterparts, animations were smooth.

Playing it today? Yeah, it looks dated. Textures are simple, lighting isn’t fancy, poly counts are low. But the art style holds up okay because it’s cartoony. It doesn’t look bad, just old. Runs super smoothly on any modern PC, obviously.

Sound
This is where the game still shines! The sound design was top-notch.

Voice Acting: Most of the main voice actors from the movie actually reprised their roles (Tom Hanks, Tim Allen weren’t in it, but their soundalikes were EXCELLENT and most others were original cast like Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn). This made a HUGE difference in immersion.
Music: Uses Randy Newman’s iconic themes from the movies perfectly. The Toy Box mode had its own catchy Western-style tunes too.
Sound Effects: Everything sounds right – Buzz’s laser, Woody’s pull-string, Bullseye’s gallop.
Honestly, the audio holds up way better than the graphics.

Tips for Playing (Newbies & Old Timers!)
For New Players Just Starting
Don’t skip the Story Mode intro levels: They teach you the basic controls for all 3 characters.
Jump into Toy Box early: Don’t feel like you need to beat the Story first. Toy Box is where the long-term fun is.
Talk to EVERYONE in Toy Box: Do the initial missions Hamm gives you – they unlock key buildings and features fast.
Smash wooden crates: They often contain gold needed to buy stuff.
Get Bullseye ASAP: Makes travelling around the Toy Box way faster. Check Stinky Pete’s shop early on.
Collect the obvious capsules first: Grab the easy-to-reach collectibles to start earning gold for upgrades.
Don’t worry about perfection: Just have fun building your town and doing silly missions!
For Returning Players / Getting Advanced
Master character switching: Some collectibles/areas in Story Mode require swapping characters effectively.

Final Thoughts on the GAME Itself
So, the Toy Story 3 PC game? Yeah, it was legitimately great, especially that groundbreaking Toy Box mode. The story mode was a solid movie tie-in, but the sandbox freedom was where the magic happened. Decent platforming, fun missions, great voice acting, and tons of charm.

If you can track down a working disc copy safely and get it running, it’s a fantastic nostalgia trip. Just focus on the Toy Box – that’s the timeless part!
