One of the most well-known examples of cellular automata is the Game of Life, which was developed by mathematician John Conway in 1970. How It Works
Basic Rules
The Game of Life is played on a grid of cells; each cell can be in one of two possible states: alive (1) or dead (0). The state of each cell changes according to the following four rules that apply at each iteration or “generation”:

Birth: A dead cell with three live neighbors becomes alive.
Survival: A live cell with two or three live neighbors remains alive; otherwise, it dies.
Overpopulation: A live cell has more than three live neighbors. It dies.
Loneliness: A live cell has less than two live neighbors. It dies.
Initial Configuration
Evolution of the game is given by an initial configuration, either randomly generated or set manually. Players usually experiment with various patterns, which could lead to very interesting behaviors and outcomes.
